"ask after" or "ask for"

“To ask after” somebody means to like to know how the person is, what he/she is doing, where he/she lives etc.You, in other words, inquire about the person's welfare e.g. She asks after the children whenever we meet.

"To ask for" means to request somebody's appearance e.g. A visitor is asking for you.
